Gentiana saponaria The petals of Soapwort Gentian also remain closed, but the tips of the petals are free of the enclosing membrane and the flower is slightly open at the apex. The sepals of Soapwort Gentian are straight, not reflexed.
Gentiana linearis Narrow-leaved Gentian has elongate, narrow leaves. Closed Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii) Identification: Flowers showy, large, blue-purple (pinkish when immature). Flower petals held closed by a fringed membrane, membrane slightly longer than the petals. Sepals curved downward. Flowers in a small terminal cluster and in the leaf axils further down the stem. Leaves lanceolate in opposite pairs and smooth outer margins. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height. Distribution: Manitoba in the west to Vermont in the east, southward to Virginia and Missouri. Also occurs in the northern Plains States. Habitat: Closed Gentian is found in wet meadows and other wet habitats. Flowering period: August to October. |
