Pine Barren Gentian (Gentiana autumnalis)

Identification: Flowers violet, with 5 petals, petals fused for one-half of their length. Petals free for apical half, flared outward lily-like. Space between petals with pleats. Inner throat of flower with white stripes and spots. Flowers upright, either solitary or in small groups of 2 or 3. Leaves thin, linear, elongate. Plant 8 to 18 inches in length.

Distribution: An Atlantic Coast species found from New Jersey southward to Georgia.

Habitat: Pine Barren Gentian is a species of wet Pine Barrens and coastal bogs.

Flowering period: August to October.
