Storksbill (Erodium cicutarium)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers pink to lavender, with 5 petals. Seedpods sharply pointed, elongate. Seedpod stem with a sharp angle. Leaves heavily divided, but fernlike with pairs of lobes on opposite sides of the leaf petiole (pinnate). Each lobe itself heavily divided. Plant 3 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of North America.

Habitat: Storksbill is a weedy species found along roadsides and on sandy soils.

Flowering period: April to October.

The combination of the geranium type flowers and seedpods and the pinnately compound leaves will easily identify this species.
