Hydrophyllum macrophyllum The typical Hydrophyllum flowers and the heavily subdivided leaves easily identify this species. Large-leaved Waterleaf is similar, but the stem and leaves are hairy. Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum) Identification: Flowers white to pale violet, delicate, with 5 petals and a series of long, projecting stamens. Flowers arranged in a loose cluster arising on a long flower stem with a leaf. Stem and leaves smooth. Leaves heavily subdivided into 5 or 7 lobes. Lobes sometimes blotched. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Manitoba in the west to New England in the east, southward to North Carolina and Oklahoma. Habitat: Virginia Waterleaf is found in forest and along the banks of streams and rivers. Flowering period: May to August. |
