Fragrant Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata)

Identification: Plant aquatic with large, floating leaves. Flowers large (3 to 5 inches across), with numerous white, pointed petals of steadily decreasing size toward the center. Stamens large and yellow. Leaf ovate to round, purplish underneath, and with a large, triangular indentation at the insertion of the submerged stem. Commonly very fragrant.

Distribution: Throughout North America.

Habitat: Fragrant Water Lily is found in ponds and quiet lakes. The species is also commonly planted in landscaped aquatic gardens.

Flowering period: June to September.
