Rhexia virginica Maryland Meadow Beauty can be confused with Virginia Meadow Beauty. Virginia Meadow Beauty has flowers that are a deeper rose color. The stem is quadrate, not round, and the leaves have wide bases that are nearly sessile to the stem. Maryland Meadow Beauty (Rhexia mariana) Identification: Flowers pale pink to pale lavender. Flower with 4 petals, petals irregular in shape, sometimes nearly quadrate. Anthers large, elongate, yellow, and curved. Stem round, hairy. Leaves hairy, elongate and narrow, with a finely toothed outer margin. Base of leaf narrow, not sessile with the stem. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height. Distribution: Found mostly along the Atlantic Coastal Plain from southern New England southward to Florida. Also occurs throughout most of the rest of the eastern United States. Habitat: Maryland Meadow Beauty is found on wet, sandy soils, particularly sand barrens. Flowering period: July to September. |
