Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris)

Identification: Flower violet, violetlike with 5 petals and a long spur. Center of flower white. Flowers solitary on long flowering stalks arising from a basal rosette of leaves. Leaves in a basal rosette, shiny, waxy, with the edges curling upward and inward. Outer margin without teeth. Plant 1 to 6 inches in height.

Distribution: Northern and central Canada southward to Washington in the west, to northern Michigan, northern New York, and northern New England in the east. Also found in northern Europe and Asia.

Habitat: Butterwort occurs on rocks, gravelly soils, and bogs.

Flowering period: June to July.
