Hibiscus moscheutos Halberd-leaved Rose Mallow can be mistaken for Swamp Rose Mallow. All the leaves of Swamp Rose Mallow are ovate, not elongate, arrow-leaved. The underside of Swamp Rose Mallow leaves are covered with a fine pubescence. Halberd-leaved Rose Mallow (Hibiscus laevis) Identification: Flower large (4 to 6 inches in width) white-pink to light pink, with center reddish-purple. Stamens in a bushy column. Leaves without hair on both sides, lower leaves elongate, pointed at the apex and with two arrowhead shaped projections at the base of the plant. Plant 3 to 5 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout the eastern United States. Habitat: Halberd-leaved Rose Mallow is found along the banks of rivers and in swamps. Flowering period: July to September. |
