Sweet Pinesap (Monotropsis odorata)

Identification: Plants parasitic on the living or dead roots of other plants, lacking chlorophyll. Stem fleshy, rose to light purple. Flowers pink. Flowers arising in clusters at the end of the stems. Flowers with a strong, violetlike fragrance. Leaves reduced to scattered scales along the stem, although scales apparently more numerous and larger relative to related species. Plant 2 to 4 inches in height.

Distribution: A southern species found from West Virginia and Maryland southward to Florida and Alabama.

Habitat: Sweet Pinesap is found in pine forest.

Flowering period: March to April.
