White Dead Nettle (Lamium album)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers white, large for the family. Lower petal lobe narrow at the base, expanding into a broad, bilobed apex. Upper petal lobe concave, helmet-shaped. Opening between upper and lower petal lobes large, open. Calyx large, with elongate bristles. Flowers arranged in whorls in the leaf axils. Stem square and weakly hairy. Leaves heart-shaped suggesting the leaves of a nettle. Outer margin toothed. Plant 6 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada, southward to Minnesota in the west and Virginia in the east.

Habitat: White Dead Nettle is found in a variety of disturbed habitats included fields and roadsides.

Flowering period: May to October.

The large white, distintively shaped flowers in the leaf axils and the nettlelike leaves will usually identify this species.
