Marsh Horehound (Lycopus europaeus)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers small, white, tubular, with free petal lobes of no particular unique structure. Calyx with a series of spiny projections giving the flower clusters a bristly appearance. Flowers clustered in the leaf axils. Stem naked or finely downy. Leaves elongate, narrow, deeply cut with toothlike lobes. Plant 1 to 2.5 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America.

Habitat: Marsh Horehound is found in a variety of disturbed habitats including fields and roadsides.

Flowering period: July to October.
