Heal-all (Prunella vulgaris)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers violet, outside of petals darker than the white of the interior. Lower petal lobe broad, fringed. Upper petal lobe concave, helmetlike. Flowers arranged in a terminal clublike cluster with the flowers arranged sporadically in a tight mass of large, fringed bracts. Bracts commonly tinged with purple. Stem square, without hairs. Leaves bladelike, hairless, with smooth outer margins. Plant 3 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout North America.

Habitat: Heal-all is a weed found in fields, empty lots, roadsides, and lawns.

Flowering period: May to September.

Similar Species:

The beautiful flower with the broad, fringed lower petal lobe and the clublike apical flower cluster are distinctive features of this species.
