Hairy Skullcap (Scutellaria elliptica)

Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a downward hanging, bilobed lip. Corolla tube bent upwards. Flowers arranged in a terminal raceme (loose spike). Stem square. Stem and leaves hairy. Leaves ovate, with a toothed outer margin. Upper leaves nearly sessile to the stem, lower leaves with long petioles. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Iowa in the west, eastward to southern New York and southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Hairy Skullcap is found in dry woods and thickets.
