Scutellaria serrata The leaves of Showy Skullcap and Hairy Skullcap are broader and shorter.
Scutellaria elliptica The leaves of Showy Skullcap and Hairy Skullcap are broader and shorter.
Scutellaria ovata The leaves of Heart-shaped Skullcap are heart-shaped. Downy Skullcap (Scutellaria incana) Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a downward hanging, bilobed lip. Corolla tube bent upwards. Flowers arranged in branched, terminal racemes (loose spikes). Stem square. Stem and leaves covered with fine whitish hairs. Leaves opposite, elongate, narrow, with a dentate outer margin. Plant 1 to 3.5 feet in height. Distribution: Iowa in the west, eastward to southern New York, and southward to Florida and Texas. Habitat: Downy Skullcap is found in dry woods and woodland clearings. Flowering period: June to September. |
