Hyssop Skullcap (Scutellaria integrifolia)

Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a downward hanging, bilobed lip. Throat of flower with two lighter stripes. Corolla tube bent upwards. Flowers arranged in a series of terminal racemes (loose spikes). Stem square, minutely hair. Leaves elongate, narrow and with the outer margin untoothed. Plant 6 to 30 inches in height.

Distribution: Missouri in the west to Connecticut in the east, southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Hyssop Skullcap is found in clearings and the margins of woods.

Flowering period: May to July.

Similar Species: 

The combination of the Scutellaria type flowers and the elongate, narrow leaves with untoothed outer margins easily identify this species.
