Veined Skullcap (Scutellaria nervosa)

Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a downward hanging, bilobed lip. Flowers solitary, arising from the leaf axils. Corolla bent upward. Stem square. Leaves opposite, ovate, with numerous coarse teeth. Middle and upper leaves nearly sessile to the stem. Upper leaves greater than 0.65 inches in length. Plant 6 to 24 inches in height.

Distribution: Iowa in the west to Ontario in the east, southward to Georgia and Louisiana.

Habitat: Veined Skullcap is found in wet woods and thickets.

Flowering period: May to July.
