Smaller Skullcap (Scutellaria parvula)

Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet to pink. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a large, downward hanging, trilobed lip. Large, downward hanging lobe spotted with darker purple. Flowers solitary, arising from the leaf axils. Corolla bent upward. Stem square, may be either smooth or densely hairy. Leaves opposite, small (less than 0.65 inches in length), with outer margin weakly toothed or even. Plant relatively small, 3 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout eastern and central North America.

Habitat: Smaller Skullcap is found on a variety of limestone derived soils, and is particularly common in dry woods.

Flowering period: May to July.
