Scutellaria elliptica The leaves of Hairy Skullcap are hairy.
Scutellaria incana Downy Skullcap is hoary with minute whitish hairs. The leaves of Downy Skullcap are longer and the petioles of the lower leaves are much shorter.
Scutellaria ovata Heart-shaped Skullcap (as the name implies) has heart-shaped leaves. Showy Skullcap (Scutellaria serrata) Identification: Flowers tubular, narrow, violet. Upper petal a concave caplike structure with two smaller, lateral petal lobes. Bottom petal lobes fused into a downward hanging, bilobed lip. Corolla tube bent upwards. Flowers arranged in a terminal raceme (loose spike). Stem square and hairless. Leaves hairless, large, ovate, toothed. Lower leaves with base tapering into a long petiole. Plant 8 to 24 inches in height. Distribution: Ohio and Mississippi in the west to New York and South Carolina in the east. Habitat: Found in woods and along river banks. Flowering period: May to June.
