Milk Pea (Galactia regularis [L.] B.S.P.)

Identification: A vine almost always trailing on the ground. Flowers pealike, red-purple and on distinct stalks from the flower stalk. Pods straight, hairy. Leaves with 3 leaflets, each leaflet ovate, elongate, rounded at both the top and bottom.

Distribution: Missouri and Illinois in the west to New York and New Jersey in the east, southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Milk Pea is a species of sandy soils.

Flowering period: June to August.

Similar Species: The ground hugging nature of the plant along with the leaflets rounded at both the base and apex will generally identify this species.
