Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria L.) Alien: Native of Europe. Identification: A bushy shrub. Flowers yellow, showy, with rolled, upper petals (standard). Flowers arising from the leaf axils. Seedpods narrow, wavy. Stems woody, angled. Leaves undivided, shiny, small, elongate, alternate on the stem. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height. Distribution: Local, found from New England to Michigan and southward to Virginia. Also occurs in Washington state. Habitat: Dyer's Greenweed is found on dry soils. Flowering period: June to September. Similar Species: Dyer's Greenweed lacks the spines of Gorse and the 3 leaflets of Broom. |
