Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum Ker)

Identification: Flower large, yellow and single on the apex of a long flowering stalk. Petals reflexed backward, the stamens projecting outward. Leaves elongate, broad, occurring in a pair at the base of the plant. Leaves mottled with dull purple. Plant 4 to 10 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout eastern North America.

Habitat: Found in a variety of forest types, but preferring wet soils.

Flowering period: March to May.

Similar Species: White Trout Lily has a white flower and the leaves are seldom mottled with purple.
