Tiger Lily (Lilium tigrinum Ker) Alien: Native of eastern Asia. Identification: Flowers orange-red with the petals strongly curved backward (reflexed). Interior heavily spotted with black. Stamens very long and strongly projecting beyond the end of the flower. Leaves arranged alternately along the stem with a small, dark bulbet in the leaf axil. Plant 2 to 5 feet in height. Distribution: Found as an escape throughout most of North America. Habitat: The Tiger Lily is an escape from gardens and is usually found along roadsides and other waste areas. Flowering period: July to August. Similar Species: The elongate stamens, reflexed petals, and the alternate leaves with small bulbets in the leaf axils are characteristic of the Tiger Lily. |
