Yucca (Yucca filamentosa L.)

Identification: Flowers white with a slight green tinge, large, bell-shaped, usually hanging downward. Flowers solitary, hanging from short flower stems from the woody stem. Fruit a swollen pod. Leaves elongate, stiff, with stiff, sharp apical points. Edges of leaves with threads curling off (the filaments of filamentosa). Leaves in a basal rosette.

Distribution: Found primarily along the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Massachusetts to Florida and along the Gulf Coast to Texas. Also found inland sparingly.

Flowering Period: June to September.

Habitat: Yucca is found on a variety of sandy soils including sandy dunes and pine barrens.

Similar Species: Yucca is unlikely to be confused with any other plant species.
