Nodding Trilium (Trillium cernuum L.)

Identification: Flowers white (rarely pink) and hanging below the leaves. Flower petals curved backward (recurved). Stamens pink to yellow-pink. Leaves broad. Plant 10 to 18 inches in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada southward to South Dakota in the west and Virginia in the east.

Habitat: Nodding Trillium is found in wet woods with acid or peaty soil.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species: Nodding Trillium may be confused with Drooping Trillium (Trillium flexipes) (not treated here). The stamens of Nodding Trillium are cream-white in color and the petals are not recurved.
