Large-flowered Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora Sm.)

Identification: Flower single, yellow to yellow-green, bell-shaped and hanging. Flower stalk appears to pierce the leaves. Inside of flower smooth, without orange granules. Leaves smooth, strongly clasping stem. Underside of leaf whitish and finely hairy. Plant 6 to 20 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout eastern and central North America.

Habitat: Large-flowered Bellwort is found in a variety of wooded habitats.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species: Large-flowered Bellwort is most likely to be confused with Perfoliate Bellwort. The inside of the flower of Perfoliate Bellwort is covered with orangish granules. The inside of the flower of Large-flowered Bellwort is smooth and lacks granules. The apparent piercing of the leaves of Large-flowered Bellwort will separate it from Wild Oats and Mountain Bellwort.
