Trumpets (Sarracenia flava L.)

Identification: A bog species. Flower large, nodding, with large, drooping yellow petals surrounding a swollen, round pistil. Flower solitary on a long flowering stalk. Leaves modified into a narrow, elongate funnel-like structure, usually partially filled with water. Top of funnel with a cap-like hood hanging over the opening of the funnel. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution:  Found from Virginia in the north to Florida and Louisiana in the south.

Habitat: Trumpets are found in bogs and in wet pine barrens.

Flowering period: April to May.

Similar Species: Trumpets is one of the most distinctive North American plant species.
