Canada Anemone (Anemone canadensis L.)

Identification: Flowers white with 5 "petals" ("petals" are actually sepals), large. Flower on an elongate stem. Leaves roughly divided into 3 parts and base sessile and enclosing the stem. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Southern Canada southward in the east to Missouri, Virginia, and Tennessee. Also occurs in the Rocky Mountain states and the northern Plains states.

Habitat: Canada Anemone is found in meadows and low, brushy areas.

Flowering period: May to July.

Similar Species: The large white flowers on long stalks and the sessile leaves embracing the stem are distinctive for Canada Anemone.
