Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla patens (L.) Mill.) Identification: Flowers large, white or pale blue with 5 to 7 petal-like sepals. Flowers appear before leaves. Plant covered with fine hair. Seed-heads with fringed hairs as in the genus Clematis. Leaves deeply cut, resembling buttercup leaves. Plant 6 to 15 inches in height. Distribution: Found primarily in the prairie regions of the central and Rocky Mountain regions of North America, but entering eastern North America in Minnesota south and east to Illinois and Michigan. Habitat: Pasque Flower is found in dry prairie. Flowering period: March to April. Similar Species: The flowers, habitat, and billowy seed heads are distinctive. |
