Mountain Avens (Geum peckii Pursh)

Identification: Flowers yellow, buttercup-like, with 5 broad petals and numerous stamens. Flowers solitary. Upper leaves reduced, not compound. Lower leaves consisting of a single large, round terminal leaflet and a few highly reduced lateral leaflets. Plant 0.5 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Found in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Habitat: Mountain Avens is an alpine species found on the high slopes of the White Mountains.

Flowering period: June to September.

Similar Species: The alpine habitat and the unique leaf shape are highly distinctive features of this rare, alpine species.
