Blue-eyed Mary (Collinsia verna Nutt.)

Identification: Flowers of 2 color, 2 upper lobes white and erect, lower 3 lobes blue. Middle lower lobe folded and hidden. Stem smooth. Leaves oblong, sessile to the stem (except for lowest leaves), and with a toothed outer margin. Plant 6 to 24 inches in height.

Distribution: Southern Wisconsin eastward to western New York, southward to Arkansas, Kentucky, and Virginia.

Habitat: Blue-eyed Mary is found in rich, mature woods.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species: The bicolored flowers are distinctive.
