Moth Mullein (Verbascum blattaria L.)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers large, white (sometimes yellow) with 5 free petals. Center of flower with a purple center and purple stamens with yellow anthers. Flowers arranged in a loose, elongate, terminal spike. Flower buds button-like. Stem hairy. Leaves alternate, arrowhead-shaped, tapering to the apex and with a broad base sessile to the stem. Outer leaf margin toothed. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of North America.

Habitat: Moth Mullein is a species of disturbed habitats such as fields, empty lots, and roadsides.

Flowering period: June to October.

Similar Species: The flowers and leaves of this species are distinctive.
