American Brooklime (Veronica americana Schwein. ex Benth.) Identification: An erect plant. Flowers blue, with 4 petals and 2 spreading stamens. Lower petal smaller and narrower than the other 3. Center of flower white. Flowers distributed in loose racemes at the apex of the plant. Stem smooth. Leaves in opposite pairs, fleshy, with distinct petioles, and toothed outer margins. Plant 0.5 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Across Canada and most of the United States except for the southeast. Habitat: American Brookline is found in swamps and along the borders of streams. Flowering period: April to September. Similar Species: American Brooklime is easily identified by its typical veronica flowers and the fleshy leaves. |
