Halberd-leaved Violet (Viola hastata Michx.)

Identification: Flowers and leaves arising from same stem. Flowers yellow. Leaves elongate, triangular. Root elongate, white, and brittle.

Distribution: Ohio and New York in the north to Florida and Alabama in the south.

Habitat: Halberd-leaved Violet is found in broad-leaf woods and ravines.

Flowering period: April to May.

Similar Species: The triangular leaves and yellow flowers are distinctive.
