Southern Wood Violet (Viola hirsutula Brainerd)

Identification: Leaves basal and flowers on separate stalks. Flowers deep violet, often with a reddish tint. Lateral petals with beards (erect hairs). Leaves heart-shaped, purple below and covered with white-downy hairs above and accented with purple veins.

Distribution: New York and Indiana in the north, southward to Florida and Alabama.

Habitat: Forest and clearings in the forest.

Flowering period: April to May.

Similar Species: The purple tinted leaves with a white tinge above are characteristic for this species.
