Prairie Yellow Violet (Viola nuttallii Pursh)

Identification: Flowers and leaves on same stem. Flower yellow on short stalks, sometimes hidden by the leaves. Leaves lance-shaped, tapering to a long petiole. Leaf margin wavy.

Distribution: Found primiarly in central North America extending eastward to Minnesota.

Habitat: Prairie Yellow Violet is found on sandy or arid prairies.

Flowering period: April to May.

Similar Species: The lance-shaped leaves and yellow flowers are distinctive.
