Downy Yellow Violet (Viola pubescens Ait.)

Identification: Leaves and flower stalks on same stem. Flowers yellow. Stem either smooth or covered with fine hair to a variable degree. Stipules (small leaves) present at junction of leaf and flower stalks at the stem. Leaves heart-shaped smooth or with fine-hairs.

Distribution: Throughout eastern and central North America.

Habitat: Downy Yellow Violet is found in dry woods or meadows.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species: The heart-shaped leaves, yellow flowers, and presence of stipules will identify this species.

Comments: The variety with a smooth, rather than downy, stem is sometimes referred to as Smooth Yellow Violet.
