Great-spurred Violet (Viola selkirkii Pursh ex Goldie)

Identification: Leaves basal and flowers on separate stalks. Flowers light violet and with a long, rounded, and swollen spur. None of the petals with beards. Leaves heart-shaped and with indentation at the base of the leaf black narrow, deep, nearly closed up.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada southward to Ohio and Maryland.

Habitat: Great-spurred Violet is found in moist woods and along mountain slopes.

Flowering period: May to July.

Similar Species: The basal leaves and light violet flowers with thick, elongate spurs are distinctive for this species.
