Paramiana marina (Smith)

Cerma marina Smith, 1906, Canad. Ent., 38:226.

Diagnosis: Paramiana marina is one of two small species in the smaragdina species group; the other is Paramiana new species 4. The two species are very similar in maculation and coloration. The maculation and general appearance of the forewing of Paramiana new species 4 is crisp, and the spots and lines are clearly delineated with white. The orbicular and reniform spots are usually totally outlined with white. The claviform spot is black, distinct, usually nearly joining a black spot on the inside of the postmedial line just below the reniform spot. In contrast the maculation and general appearance of the forewing of marina is diffuse, and the spots and lines are not clearly delineated with white. The upper and lower regions of the orbicular and reniform spots are diffuse and not outlined with white. The claviform spot usually is not distinct and not nearly joining a black blotch on the inner side of the postmedial line just below reniform spot. The differences between the male and female genitalia are discussed under the description of Paramiana new species 4. Wing length: mean = 11.02 mm, standard deviation = 0.38 mm, n = 10.

Adults have been collected in August, September, and October

Distribution: This species has a more restricted distribution than new species 4 and is known only from Pima, Cochise, and Santa Cruz Counties in southern Arizona. The female hindwing is more deeply suffused with brown than the male on the whole, although the amount of brown suffusion in the male hindwing is slightly variable..
