Triocnemidini New Genus 1 new species 1

Diagnosis: Triocnemidini New Genus 1 new species 1 is a sister species of grandimacula, but is larger and lacks the dark streak along the M3 vein in the outer third of the forewing. The forewing is a smooth gray black and the basal line is absent. The antemedial line is dark black, rounded outward in the discal cell and then running straight to the inner margin. The claviform mark is present, but variable in the two known species, a small black blotch in one specimen, but larger and defined by a dark black line in the other. The orbicular is round and defined by a thin, black line. The reniform mark is elongate and ovate, also defined by a thin black line. The postmedial line is slightly dentate on the veins and marked by white along its outer side between vein M3 and the inner margin. A subterminal line is absent and the terminal line consists of a few vague black dots with vague dark streaks running to the outer margin. The ventral forewing is white but with black scales located along the costal margin from the reniform mark to the apex and from the apex down along the outer margin. The upper fourth of the postmedial line is denoted by a few black scales and the reniform mark is a small, black dot. The hindwing is pure white dorsally and ventrally with a small, dark discal dot on the under surface of the hindwing.

These two known males were collected in April and May respectively.

Distribution: Triocnemidini New Genus 1 new species 1 is known from only two males, both from the vicinity of the Guadalupe Mountains in western Texas.

This species appears to be a larger, smoother version of the more ubiquitous species Triocnemidini New Genus 1 grandimacula. A dark streak is absent from the anal angle and dark streaks are absent from the veins in the outer fourth of the wing. Dark streaks are commonly present, although not always present, in grandimacula. The male clasper is the most distinctive genitalic difference between the two species. The clasper of new species 1 is located about midway between the base and apex of the valve. The clasper is relatively thick and short and there is a concave depression basad to the sclerotized projection of the clasper base. The clasper of grandimacula is located about three fourths of the distance from the base to the apex of the valve. The clasper is relatively much thinner than that of Triocnemidini New Genus 1 new species 1 and there is no depression basad to the to the sclerotized projection of the clasper base. The female of New Genus 1 new species 1 is unknown.
